What is an MOT?

An MOT (Ministry of Transport) Test is a mandatory test that ensures your car meets essential standards for road safety, environmental impact, and overall roadworthiness. Designed to protect drivers, pedestrians, and infrastructure, MOT tests help keep vehicles in a safe condition.

Your car requires a valid MOT certificate three years after its first registration and then annually on or before the anniversary of the last MOT test. In place since 1960, this legal requirement helps maintain the safety and environmental standards of vehicles on UK roads.

Do I Need to Book an MOT Test?

If your vehicle is three years old or older, you must have a valid MOT test certificate, which needs to be renewed annually. As a car owner, it's your responsibility to ensure your vehicle passes its MOT test each year.

Beyond safety and performance concerns, driving without a valid MOT certificate is illegal - you won’t be able to renew your road tax, and you could face a fine of up to £1,000. If you're involved in an accident, you may be required to provide proof of a valid MOT, and without one, your insurance claim could be affected, particularly if a third party is involved.

With advances in technology, the DVSA has digitised the MOT system, allowing mobile camera units and police patrols to check remotely if a car has a valid MOT certificate. If yours is due to expire soon, don’t delay.

How Much Does an MOT Cost?

The maximum fee for a standard MOT test is £54.85.

Booking an MOT test online: FAQs

When does my car need an MOT?
You can find out when your MOT expires by looking at your test certificate or using our free MOT checker. All you need is your registration number and we can tell you straight away if the vehicle has a valid certificate, plus when the MOT expires.
What's the difference between an MOT and a service?

While MOTs and services are often talked about at the same time, they are different.

· MOTs are compulsory tests that make sure your car is operating within the law. It provides a certificate which lasts for 12 months, which shows that the vehicle was roadworthy at the time of the test. No work is carried out on the vehicle during the test and no parts are replaced. You can find out what's included in an MOT test in our guide.

· A Service cover some of the same areas as an MOT but typically go much further, focusing on the overall condition of the car. A service is needed to help to keep your vehicle running well. It also keeps the maintenance history of your vehicle up to date, which will help the retained value of the vehicle and reassure whoever buys the vehicle from you that it has been cared for. So, in a service, certain items are replaced that wear out or need to be changed as recommended by the vehicle manufacturer after a specific time or mileage. Engine oil is drained and replaced with fresh, and a new oil filter is fitted. Spark plugs may need to be changed, and other filters and consumables are also renewed – replacement of items like these aren’t covered in an MOT.

You can find out what’s included in a Protyre Autocare service before you book an MOT test online, to help you decide if you need both doing at the same time.

What happens if my MOT certificate expires?

If your MOT expires, you must stop driving your car and book an MOT test as soon as possible. The car must pass an MOT test before it can be used on the road again. You should always be aware of the consequences of driving without an MOT.

How long does an MOT certificate last?

All MOT certificates last one year. You must book an MOT every year, on or before the anniversary of the previous test. For new cars, the first MOT test should be booked three years after the car’s initial registration date.

Can I tax my car without an MOT?

You must have a valid MOT certificate before you tax your car. You won’t be able to tax your vehicle without one, as it’s a legal prerequisite.

Can I insure my car without an MOT?

While you might be able to purchase an insurance policy, it will generally be invalid if you do not have a valid MOT certificate. Insurers require the vehicle to be roadworthy, which is proven by a valid MOT. If you have an accident without an MOT, your insurer is likely to reject your claim.
